Chronicles of Bear Creek Plantation. 1000 acres on the Goshen Swamp of Duplin County. Hunting paradise; Deer, Bear, Turkey, Quail, Ducks and much more.
Sadly I have been following over a dozen hens and these five poults are all I am seeing. Other hens are starting to flock up with no poults. I believe that spring flood must have killed a lot of nest and the bobcat population here is tremendous. This fall we will be trapping hard. The one lone reddish headed turkey, does anyone know what its problem is? I was told today survivor rate this year is around 6% state wide. Speculation is predators benefiting from farming practices and broke up fields lots of edges.
We have been seeing several Quail in the last two weeks. Prior to that we went five weeks without hearing or seeing any. However the previous time before the five weeks we were hearing and seeing a lot. It appears that they have nested and hatched and are trying for a second clutch. Two days ago I jump at Hawk as he flew off a Quail flew off too. I investigated to find the hawk was eating a rabbit. The Quail landed 100 yards away and start calling Bob white! I drove down the path about 400 yards and jumped a hen Quail on the side of the road. She flew in the cutdown about 50 yards
